Isabel had just placed peppermint on her temples when her companion’s head rose. Glancing around, Mrs. Doddrey asked, “Do I smell peppermint?”

“I just placed some on my temples to help with my headache,” Isabel explained.

Mrs. Doddrey considered her for a moment. “Is it working?”

Isabel inhaled the strong scent. “I suppose it is.”

“I shall have to try that the next time I have a headache.” Mrs. Doddrey rose awkwardly from her seat. “If you have no objections, I am going to my room to lie down for a spell.”

“I have none.”

Mrs. Doddrey nodded in approval. “Do try to stay out of trouble until I return,” she said lightly.

“I have every intention to.”

Isabel watched as her companion departed from the room and shook her head, wondering how Mrs. Doddrey could still be tired after her long nap.

Since she was alone, she leaned back and rested the back of her head on the settee. It wasn’t very proper of her, but she didn’t care at the moment. She closed her eyes, enjoying the smell of peppermint.

Her mind started wandering, but it didn’t take long for it to settle on Anthony. He was beginning to occupy more of her thoughts, both day and night. That was not a good thing. Pining after him would only end in heartache for her, she was sure of it.

The butler’s voice broke through her musings. “Pardon me, miss, but Miss Wright has come to call.”

Isabel opened her eyes and sat up eagerly. “Please send her in,” she ordered as she smoothed back her blonde hair.

“Yes, miss.”

It was only a moment before Ellen stepped into the room with a determined stride. “I am sorry for coming unannounced, but I had to see you.”

“You have nothing to apologize for,” Isabel assured her. “I am always happy to receive you.”

Ellen came and dropped down onto the settee. “Jemima is making my life miserable,” she declared.

“How so?”

“The other night, I saw Lord Heatherton at the opera, but Jemima threw a fit when he tipped his head at me.”

“She was upset that he acknowledged you?”

“Yes,” Ellen said. “He was sitting across from us in his box and our eyes met.”

“That sounds romantic.”

Ellen heaved a dramatic sigh. “It was,” she swooned, falling back against the settee. “I think I am in love.”

“Isn’t that a little sudden?”

“It is, but I believe Lord Heatherton felt it, too.”

“What exactly did he feel?”

“There is a familiarity about him that I cannot explain,” Ellen said. “It feels as if I have known him forever.”

“That is rubbish.”

“Is it?” Ellen asked. “If he didn’t feel the same way, why did he acknowledge me?”

“Perhaps because he was raised to be a gentleman.”

“Or he is harboring affection for me, and he can’t wait to confess his undying love to me.”

Isabel laughed. “You are hopeless.”

“Regardless, Jemima made us leave shortly thereafter,” Ellen shared. “She told me that Lord Heatherton is far above my station, and I should be content with landed gentry.”

“She said that?”

“Yes, she was rather insistent about it.”

“What did Lady Worton say?”

Ellen sat up.
