Isabel had just placed peppermint on her temples when her companionâs head rose. Glancing around, Mrs. Doddrey asked, âDo I smell peppermint?â
âI just placed some on my temples to help with my headache,â Isabel explained.
Mrs. Doddrey considered her for a moment. âIs it working?â
Isabel inhaled the strong scent. âI suppose it is.â
âI shall have to try that the next time I have a headache.â Mrs. Doddrey rose awkwardly from her seat. âIf you have no objections, I am going to my room to lie down for a spell.â
âI have none.â
Mrs. Doddrey nodded in approval. âDo try to stay out of trouble until I return,â she said lightly.
âI have every intention to.â
Isabel watched as her companion departed from the room and shook her head, wondering how Mrs. Doddrey could still be tired after her long nap.
Since she was alone, she leaned back and rested the back of her head on the settee. It wasnât very proper of her, but she didnât care at the moment. She closed her eyes, enjoying the smell of peppermint.
Her mind started wandering, but it didnât take long for it to settle on Anthony. He was beginning to occupy more of her thoughts, both day and night. That was not a good thing. Pining after him would only end in heartache for her, she was sure of it.
The butlerâs voice broke through her musings. âPardon me, miss, but Miss Wright has come to call.â
Isabel opened her eyes and sat up eagerly. âPlease send her in,â she ordered as she smoothed back her blonde hair.
âYes, miss.â
It was only a moment before Ellen stepped into the room with a determined stride. âI am sorry for coming unannounced, but I had to see you.â
âYou have nothing to apologize for,â Isabel assured her. âI am always happy to receive you.â
Ellen came and dropped down onto the settee. âJemima is making my life miserable,â she declared.
âHow so?â
âThe other night, I saw Lord Heatherton at the opera, but Jemima threw a fit when he tipped his head at me.â
âShe was upset that he acknowledged you?â
âYes,â Ellen said. âHe was sitting across from us in his box and our eyes met.â
âThat sounds romantic.â
Ellen heaved a dramatic sigh. âIt was,â she swooned, falling back against the settee. âI think I am in love.â
âIsnât that a little sudden?â
âIt is, but I believe Lord Heatherton felt it, too.â
âWhat exactly did he feel?â
âThere is a familiarity about him that I cannot explain,â Ellen said. âIt feels as if I have known him forever.â
âThat is rubbish.â
âIs it?â Ellen asked. âIf he didnât feel the same way, why did he acknowledge me?â
âPerhaps because he was raised to be a gentleman.â
âOr he is harboring affection for me, and he canât wait to confess his undying love to me.â
Isabel laughed. âYou are hopeless.â
âRegardless, Jemima made us leave shortly thereafter,â Ellen shared. âShe told me that Lord Heatherton is far above my station, and I should be content with landed gentry.â
âShe said that?â
âYes, she was rather insistent about it.â
âWhat did Lady Worton say?â
Ellen sat up.
